This photograph was taken in a small clump of coral heads in the middle of a sandy slope at a depth of about 10 m. The coral was partially covered with sand and detritus, as well as numerous sponges and other detritus and filter feeding invertebrates. The red mass in the middle of the photograph is about 25 cm across. Imagine you are a small fish swimming by this area. Is the red mass a sponge, or is it something more threatening?
