1. DESCRIPTION OF OUR SCREENSAVERS

Our screensavers are self-installing shareware. Images are optimized for a screen settings of 1024x768 and 32 bit color. The encapsulated image files are in jpg format saved at a high quality setting with file sizes averaging between 200 and 250Kb each. Using such large files does mean that most of our screensavers do take up a significant amount of hard disk space on the users computer (between about 10 and 75Megabytes). However, we believe these constraints are a small prices to pay for viewing these images without the distortion and loss of quality that would be associated with more compressed images.

All our screensavers are designed and tested for computers with Windows operating systems (WIN 95 and above).  We do not warranty that they will operate properly on any other operating system.  If you are use another operating system please be certain that standard Windows screensavers (.scr files) will install and operate properly on your system.

Installation and configuration information applicable to all of our screensavers can be found in the sections below.

2. INSTALLATION INFORMATION

Download the screensaver file to your hard disk. Either choose the "run" option diplayed after the download or navigate to the folder where you saved the file (usually your default software download folder) and double click on the appropriate ???.exe file. During the installation, a text message is displayed containing some of the information in this readme.txt file.

Please note that copying the screensaver file to your hard disk may take several minutes. When this is complete you will see a new message box that asks whether you wish to make this screensaver your default. Select your choice and press OK, close the text window that displays part of this readme file when you start the install process and the installation is then complete.

3. REGISTRATION AND LICENSE INFORMATION

The screensaver is distributed as shareware. You may use it free for up to 60 days after which it will no longer function. You must pay a modest registration fee at http:\\www.reefimages.com if you wish to use the screensaver beyond 60 days and to remove the screen reminders that the software is unregistered.

Once you have registered you agree to use the screensaver software under the following conditions (plain language - don't worry):

1) You may install a registered copy on as many as 5 computers but only if these computers belong to members of your immediate household (spouse, children) or are your (or a member of your immediate household's) employer owned computers of which you (or the member of your immediate household) are the primary or only user.
2) You agree not to give your registration information to anyone outside your immediate household and they must also agree to do this too.
3) You may make a copy or copies of our CD if you wish, and you may distribute them freely to others as long as you do not give them your registration number, or receive a fee of any kind from them for the CD copy.
4) You agree that you will not extract any of the images from the screensaver file or use them in any way other than in the screensaver. You acknowledge that you understand that all the images in the screensaver remain the copyright property of Doug Segar & Elaine Stamman Segar.

There, simple isn't it. Basically an honor system that allows you to use your registered screensaver on all the computers you and your family use and to let others have an evaluation copy that they can use in the unregistered mode and register for themselves if they wish to use it beyond a 60 day evaluation period. Please observe this honor system as this helps us to keep the price of this screensaver low and defray some of the high costs of equipment and fieldwork needed to produce images like these and maintain our educational web site.

If you would like to use any of our images in any other way than as part of the screensaver, please contact us for permission. We do provide display prints and license other uses of our images at reasonable rates.

4. CONFIGURATION HELP

In the default configuration, images are shown in random order for 10 seconds each. You may reconfigure the screensaver to show images for longer or shorter times and/or in the order in which they are included in the screensaver file. This order keeps similar species together starting with each of the different groups of fishes followed by the different types of invertebrates. With the default display time of 10 seconds it takes over one hour before all of the images have been displayed in order and the display returns to the beginning of the list.

To reconfigure your screen saver, you must access your display properties menu. Usually, this is accessible through the Windows control panel. If you cannot find the display properties shortcut in your control panel, please consult your Windows documentation.

When you have opened display properties you will see several tabs including one that says "Screen Saver". Click on this tag and you should see the name of a screensaver in a box in this window. If you installed the Lembeh Strait Critter screensaver as your default, you should see the name "Lembeh" in this box. If it is not there you need to select it from the list displayed before you can view our screensaver.

To configure your screen saver click on the "Settings" button in the Screen Saver menu box. This brings up a window with four tabs: "General", "Settings", "Effects" and "Registration". The "General" tab displays copyright information and general information about the screensaver. The "registration" tab displays the dialog you will need when you register the software and, after registration displays the name of the registered user. The "Settings" and "Effects" tabs can be selected to configure your screensaver.

      SETTINGS TAB

If you select the "Settings" tab the following options are displayed:

Image Transition pause: This option lets you choose how many seconds (up to 120) the screensaver displays a single image before changing to the next one.

You can choose whether to display images in the original size, scaled to fit the screen, or larger than the screen size (depending on your screen area setting). The images included in the screensaver are sized for a monitor setting of 1024x768. If you use this screen area setting, you should not have to change the default setting of "1-Fit images to screen size". If you use another screen area one of the other settings may be better. While you are checking your screen area settings make sure you are using the highest available color space setting for your monitor (usually 32 bit True color).

You can choose whether and where to show image captions.

Shuffle images: You can choose to see images in the order they were included in the screensaver file or in a random shuffled order. The order of images in the screensaver file keeps similar species together starting with each of the different groups of fishes followed by the different types of invertebrates. With the default display time of 10 seconds it takes over one hour before all of the images have been displayed in order and the display returns to the beginning of the list. We recommend that you usually use the default "Shuffle images" option unless you wish to view the images in sorted-by-group order.

Move images: By checking this box, you can choose to display images in a random position instead of in the center of the screen. This option is only useful if your settings are such that the images are not displayed full screen.

Use transition effects: This check box lets you select whether or not to use transition effects.

Transition effects speed: This option let you control the speed of transition effects. Higher number settings set progressively slower transitions (the total range of speeds is not large, particularly on computers with fast processors)

Background: Pressing the "..." button enable you to choose a background color for the screensaver.

Captions: Pressing the "..." button will enables you to choose a color for image captions.

Sound: Midi Music: and MP3 Music: This group of controls are inactive in our screensavers as we do not include background music files.

      EFFECTS TAB

If you click on the effects tab you will find a list of the transition effects used to change images while the screensaver is running. These effects are only used if the "Use Transition Effect" option is checked on the "Settings" tab. There are 30 different transition effects that can be used. Uncheck the box next to an effect if you do not wish to use it. Only the effects that have checked boxes are active. These active effects are used in random sequence.
